Chapter 6 - The Skeletal System: Bone Tissue - Checkpoint - Page 175: 10

Answer

Compact bones - made up of tightly packed osteons; adds to the strength and durability of the bone Spongy bones - contain trabeculae; less dense than compact bones; provide flexibility; decrease bone density for easier movement; contain red bone marrow

Work Step by Step

Compact bone is made of tightly packed osteons found under the periostereum. Their dense structure contributes to the sturdiness and durability of bones. On the other hand, unlike compact bones, spongy bones contain trabeculae that are loosely embedded in the bone matrix along lines of stress. Other than providing flexibility and containing red bone marrow, the porous structure of spongy bones decrease the overall weight of bones, which makes it easier for movement.
