Osteocytes are are potential bone forming cells that are trapped in lacunae (spaces) between layers of matrix (lamellae). They are supplied by branches of blood vessels that run in the Haversian canals. These blood vessels supply nutrients to, and remove the waste products from the osteocytes. Blockage of Haversian canals would compromise the blood supply of the osteocytes and impair their functioning and viability.

Haversian canals also contain nerves and are interconnected by Volkmann's canals. Volkmann's canals also connect the Haversian canal blood vessels with the periosteal blood supply.
