Periosteal arteries enter the diaphysis of the bone through channels called Volkmann's canals, which course at right angles to the long axis of long bones. . First, the periosteal blood vessels supply the periosteum and the outer layers of the compact bone. Then so-called nutrient arteries enter the medullary cavity through foramina or holes in the compact bone.
