The acetabulum of the hip bone is comprises of parts of ilium, ischium and pubis. The head of the femur fits into the acetabulum to form the hip joint (coxal joint). This is a ball and socket joint like the glenohumeral joint of the shoulder. The SI joint permits a wide range of motions, but less than does the shoulder joint.
