Chapter 11 - Membrane Structure - Questions - Page 381: Question 11-7

Answer

Proteins can either tethered to the cell cortex intracellular, extracellular, or to proteins on the surface of a different cell.

Work Step by Step

Proteins can either tethered to the cell cortex intracellular, extracellular, or to proteins on the surface of a different cell. Diffusion barriers restrict proteins to a specific membrane domain. Mobility of the membrane proteins is reduced if they are bound to other extracellular proteins. Certain membrane proteins are confined to membrane domains by barriers like tight junctions. The fluidity of the lipid bilayer is not affected by anchoring of some membrane proteins as the lipid molecules flow anchored membrane proteins.
