The respiratory control center controls the inspiration and expiration of air. When a person holds their breath, the hydrogen ions from the breakdown of carbon dioxide in the blood will accumulate, thus changing the pH homeostasis. The chemoreceptors will stimulate the respiratory control center to expire to normalize pH, thus breathing will involuntarily occur.
