Internal respiration is gas exchange across the respiratory membrane of metabolizing tissues; external respiration is gas exchange across the respiratory membrane of the lungs. In internal, the oxygen diffuses out from blood into the tissues and the carbon dioxide diffuses into the blood from the tissues. In external, oxygen diffuses from alveolar air into the blood, and carbon dioxide diffuses out from the blood into the alveolar air.
