Chapter 17 - Section 17.4 - The Ovarian Cycle - Check Your Progress - Page 371: 2

Answer

Changes in the ovarian and uterine cycles during pregnancy During the follicular phase, the ovary matures and ends with ovulation. High level of estrogen initiates the formation of endometrium in the uterus and production of fertile cervical mucus making a hospitable environment for the sperm. During the luteal phase, corpus luteum is formed. High level of progesterone is observed. If implantation does not occur, the corpus luteum will die resulting to drop of estrogen and progesterone levels and menstruation occurs. But if pregnancy occurs, human chorionic gonadropin is produced preserving the corpus luteum.
