The complement system is a group of plasma proteins made by the liver. These proteins play a role in fever, inflammation and innate immunity. They also form membrane attack complexes (MACs) to defend against pathogens by forming holes in their cell membrane. Complement can be activated by a classical pathway (IgG or IgM mediated), by an alternative pathway , or by a lectin pathway.
