Cerebrospinal fluid is a clear and colorless fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. It is produced by ependymal cells of the choroid plexus. It is present in the subarachnoid space. Its function is to provide homeostasis, remove metabolites and protect the brain from injury. Lumbar puncture or spinal tap can be performed to obtain cerebrospinal fluid for analysis.
