Brain and the spinal cord are enveloped by meninges (membrane). Dura mater, arachnoid mater and pia mater are the three meningeal layers: Dura mater is the outer most layer. It is thick and tough and surrounds arachnoid mater. Arachnoid mater is located between dura mater and pia mater. Subarachnoid space is the space between arachnoid mater and pia mater. Pia mater is a delicate membrane and the innermost layer that firmly adheres to spinal cord and brain. Cauda equina is a bundle of nerves that originate from the end of the spinal cord from lumbar and sacral levels.
