Group A streptococci or Streptococcus pyogenes is a gram-positive bacteria that is the most common cause of bacterial pharyngitis. Its virulence factors are M protein, streptokinase, pyrogenic toxins, C5a peptidases, and streptolysins. A hyaluronic acid capsule is responsible for camouflaging the bacteria from phagocytes. The bacteria can spread through nasal secretions of an infected person. Clinical features include fever, redness of the back of the throat, malaise, swelling of lymph nodes, and headache.
