Escherichia coli is the most common cause of urinary tract infections (70% of the cases). It is a gram negative bacteria found in the intestine. 10% of the urinary tract infections are caused by Proteus and Klebsiella that are also present in the intestine. On the other hand, Pseudomonas and Staphylococcus (non intestinal bacteria) rarely cause urinary tract infections.
