The urinary organs and the urine in them are usually axenic but the urine has to pass through the urethra and urethra supports the growth of some chiefly avirulent microbiota. When the urine passes through the urethra, it is contaminated by the organisms in the urethra and this is the reason why normally voided urine contains bacteria.
