Chapter 23 - Organic Chemistry I: Formulas, Names, and Properties - Exercises - Alkyl and Aryl Halides - Page 946: 39

Answer

a) General representation for the formula of an Alkyl bromide is : $R-Br$ where R = Alkyl group ($-CH_{3}, -CH_{2}CH_{3} $ etc.) b) Aryl bromides are represented as $Ar-Br$ where Ar means Aryl group i.e. groups having benzene ring in them. for example Phenyl group ($-C_{6}H_{5}$)

Work Step by Step

Alkyl bromide is formed when a bromine atom is substituted in place of a H atom bonded with Alkane. Aryl bromide is formed when a bromine atom is substituted in place of a H atom bonded with benzene ring.
