Chapter 23 - Organic Chemistry I: Formulas, Names, and Properties - Exercises - Mixed Exercises - Page 950: 112

Answer

The formulas are as follows: a) $C_{9}H_{16}$ b) $C_{22}H_{44}$ c)$C_{10}H_{22}$

Work Step by Step

a) Alkynes have the general formula of $C_{n}H_{2n-2}$. We have to write formula for an alkyne having 16 H atoms. hence,$ 2n-2 = 16$ By solving this equation we get $n= 9$ Hence, the formula is $C_{9}H_{16}$ b) Alkenes have the general formula of $C_{n}H_{2n}$ We have to write formula for an alkene having 44 H atoms. hence,$ 2n = 44$ By solving this equation we get $n= 22$ Hence, the formula is $C_{22}H_{44}$ c) Alkanes have the general formula of $C_{n}H_{2n+2}$ We have to write formula for an alkene having 10 C atoms. hence,$ n = 10$ $ \therefore 2n +2 = 10.2+2 = 22$ Hence, the formula is $C_{10}H_{22}$
