Chapter 8 - Molecular Structure and Covalent Bonding Theories - Exercises - Valence Bond Theory: General Concepts - Page 323: 7

Answer

Hybridized atomic orbitals are a set of identical atomic orbitals that are formed after combining all the atomic orbitals on an atom. The theory helps you understand the properties of bonds in different molecules and atoms better.

Work Step by Step

An atom has varied atomic orbitals, each of different shapes and directionality. Therefore, when a bond is formed, the resulting bond wouldn't be as strong as we observe them to be. To explain that, we employ the theory of hybridization which states that, prior to bonding, atomic orbitals combine and give rise to the same number of hybridized orbitals that have higher directionality and are better equipped to form covalent bonds. The theory of hybridization better explains the reactivity of different molecules and their shapes.
