Chapter 20 - Chemistry in the Atmosphere - Questions & Problems - Page 925: 20.7

Answer

The Earth's atmosphere has four layers: the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere and thermosphere. The stratosphere contains the ozone layer, which is very important for all life on our planet because it protects us from the solar ultraviolet radiation. Under the influence of UV radiation (UVB and UVC) from the sun, ozone molecules are being broken down into $O$ and $O_{2}$. However, this process can occur in two directions: $O_{3} \lt=> O_{2} + O$ The chemical reaction in which ozone molecules are produced is exothermic, which increases the temperature of the stratosphere.
