Chapter 2 - Structure and Properties of Organic Molecules - Problems - Page 65: Problem 2-14 j

Answer

1) The lewis structure is drawn the way the molecular formula is written. 2) In the C-H bonds the dipole moment is towards carbon and in the C-Cl bond the dipole moment is towards chlorine. The molecular dipole is towards Chlorine. 3) The compound has a large dipole moment.

Work Step by Step

1) The two hydrogens are drawn attached to carbon, which is double bonded to the second carbon. The second carbon is attached to chlorine. There are 3 lone pairs on chlorine. 2) In the C-H bonds the dipole moment is towards carbon because carbon is more electronegative than hydrogen and in the C-Cl bond the dipole moment is towards chlorine because chlorine is more electronegative than carbon. The lone pairs contribute towards the molecular dipole moment. Thus, the molecular dipole is towards Chlorine. 3) The compound has a large dipole moment due to the presence of very electronegative chlorine atom.
