Though the origin of the moon has been debated amongst scientists for some time, most scientists now agree that the Moon formed as a result of a collision between a Mars-sized body and a youthful, semi-molten Earth some 4.5 billion years ago. It was in this collision that some ejected debris went into orbit around Earth and gradually merged together to form the Moon.
