Yes. A vertically thrown projectile on its way up has an acceleration that is directed straight down. This is discussed on pages 46-47. More generally, an object's acceleration is opposite to its velocity when it is moving in a straight line and slowing down. For example, a car coming to a stop at a red light has an acceleration that is opposite to its velocity.
