Macon is on one of his trips for the Accidental Tourist series, and is, as usual, doing all he can to avoid prolonged interactions with other people. When he looks out over the city from the high-up windows of the restaurant, he suddenly feels like he has died. It's not the height that bothers him, but the feeling of distance from every other person in the world. He feels like everyone he cares about is impossibly far away, and he is completely isolated. This feeling disturbs him so much that he drops his glass of sherry—a dramatic, impractical reaction that is very unlike him....
