Focus
Rose and her brother Samuel lead worship for the people in the village in the opening scene. They work hard to keep their focus on singing, but ironically they are easily swayed when they hear Charlie's steam whistle arrive and they are lost when he tosses his cigar on the ground and everyone runs after it as if its a great treasure and Rose and Samuel have no shot at keeping their attention.
Planting Seeds
Samuel is determined to plant seeds after the German soldiers burn down the village. He believes he is running out of time to plant in season. Ironically, you can plant in any season in Africa and because he doesn't know that it shows that he has begun to go mad.
Sunday Afternoon
While on the river Rose says that she misses home mainly for the peace and quiet of Sunday afternoons. Charlie agrees with her, but ironically Sunday was his day reserved for sleeping off a hangover from the night before. It shows the vast difference in lifestyles between the two.
Broken Promise
After drinking himself drunk with gin Charlie believes that Rose is angry with him because of his drunkenness, but that isn't true. Ironically, she is angry not because he's a drunk but because he broke his promise to her. A promise that he would take her up the river.
Under Water Protection
A swarm of insects begins to bite Rose and Charlie while they are docked at shore and the engine won't start. They have to jump in in order to not be eaten alive by the bugs, but ironically then can't do that either because they've just seen alligators climb into the water and they'll be killed by them if they jump in.
