Quotes

"We simply can't remain in this back water until the war is over Mr. Allnut."

Rose

Rose tells Charlie this when he wants to do nothing while the war is on. She is telling him that there is no choice when it comes to doing what is right. A person cannot stand by on the sidelines when they know that they are able to do something to help. Anything less is wrong.

"Yes, but I must get the seeds in now. It's a bit late...August."

Samuel

Samuel says this after the village is burned down by the German soldiers. His statement tells Rose that he doesn't know where he is as planting can happen in any season in Africa. It shows that the man has begun to lose his mind.

"You know, I'm gonna do that one of these days. The only reasons I haven't done it up to now is that I kinda like kickin' it. She's all I've got."

Charlie

Charlie says this to Rose when she asks why he doesn't fix the engine with the screwdriver that was dropped into it. It shows that he is a man who will wait for the longest time before fixing something while she is one to fix it right away.
