Similes to describe the beast
In page 1 of the novel, Ozi and his ferals spot a beast. Ozi uses similes to describe the beast. He says that,''With his black fur like a fancy lady’s coat. And those teeth like piano keys.'' The similes that have been used here achieve imagery whereby a reader can visualize the beast. Its color which is black has been likened to a fancy lady's coat, while its teeth have been likened to piano keys.
Simile to describe the character of the Tommies, the Yankees, the Russskies and the French
Ozi describes them using the simile,''They’re like dogs fighting over a bone that’s got no meat on it.'' He does this because the armies are in Germany in the aftermath of the second world war. The armies in question are there for no reason for the war has ended hence the reference of the bone that has no meat on it. He also says that they are like dogs fighting over a bone because the armies had come to Germany and divided the land.
simile to describe the feral's behaviour
Ozi says that the ferals sniffed like twitching rabbits. He has therefore used the simile to explain how the ferals were twitching by likening it to the sniffing of twitching rabbits. This creates a mental image on the mind of the reader of the ferals. p.2 The simile here therefore achieves its purpose of showing how the ferals sniffed.
Similes to describe how Ozi held his gun
The author says that Ozi held his gun like a diving rod when he went to shoot the beast. The simile has been used to illustrate how he held his gun, outstretched like one would hold a diving rod. p.2 The author therefore created imagery in this statement by using a simile.
