How has Strether changed as a result of his time in Paris? Do you think that these changes have "improved" him? Why or why not?
Most students will likely agree that Strether has become more like Chad in terms of his outlook. With that said, some may add that he doesn't now have the opportunity to benefit from that. The freedom and optimism that Strether felt in earlier chapters have been replaced here with anxiety and concern for his future. Furthermore, Strether, like Chad, is becoming increasingly entangled with Mme. de Vionnet, and she hasn't "improved" him like she has "improved" Chad.
