    Why does Valentin's opinion of Newman differ from that of his mother and brother? Why would he encourage Newman's pursuit of Claire despite his family's objections?

    The fact that Valentin has his own opinions shows that the aristocracy is not monolithic, and perhaps that its customs are shifting with the younger generations. Valentin is still bound by his title and duty to his family, but he hardly benefits from the Bellegarde prestige, as he lives in a basement apartment and is prevented from engaging in some aspects of social life, like politics.
