A critical analysis of the novel's plot reveals that the seals are ironically used by the author to figurate the nature of animals which largely relate to the behavior of human beings. Human nature in the novel is muddled and animalistic just like the seals. Additionally, the competitive nature of the seals is reflected in the human being's urge to gain supremacy over others. Misskaela is a perfect example of a competitive human being who wants to command others and show that she is powerful. The irony in this novel is that human beings think that they are superior to animals but their behavior is less the same as animals.
