    Students will analyze the primary problem encountered during the first act of The Cherry Orchard and think of possible solutions to it.

    Structure:

    The primary problem presented in Act I is as follows: Madame Ranevskaya is unable to pay the debts on her family's ancestral estate. If she does not find a way to pay her debts soon, the estate will be foreclosed upon and sold at auction--leaving Madame Ranevskaya and her family with nothing. What are some ways in which this problem can be solved?
