How is Nettie's life in Africa different from her life in America? How is it similar?
Nettie is living with the Olinka people deep in a remote jungle village, unlike the farm and countryside of Georgia. The climate is hot, similar to Georgia, but much more humid and oppressive. She lives in a round hut with a roof made from a local plant. It is simple and much smaller than the farmhouses in Georgia, but it keeps her protected from the elements. The family groups are also arranged differently. There are several wives to one husband. Yet, the wives share a strong friendship. Similarly, the women in Nettie's and Celie's lives at home also have close ties.
