The Death Cure

The Death Cure Study Guide

The Death Cure is the last book in the Maze Runner trilogy, and the third book in the overall series. It was written by James Dashner and published on October 11, 2011, by Delacorte Press. Like the other books in the trilogy, this book will have a movie version. This movie will be released on January 12, 2018.

The Death Cure picks up where the previous book, The Scorch Trials, left off. The Gladers and Group B just finished the Scorch Trials successfully. Unfortunately, WICKED has lied to them: the Scorch Trials weren't the end of the tests, for WICKED has not find the cure for the Flare yet. Thus WICKED puts the Gladers and Group B in a third set of trials–this time, they are tested individually. The Gladers with Group B knows who is immune and who is not, and Newt is not immune. WICKED gives them the chance to get their memories back, but Thomas, Minho, and Newt refuse: they decide to escape instead. They manage to escape, but WICKED is still after them. Ultimately the group decides, with the help of the Right Arm, to take WICKED down.

As was the case when he wrote his other books, Dashner got the ideas of setting and premise from the hot weather of Georgia, his home state. His book garnered many fans, and many magazines reviewed it positively. Entertainment Weekly wrote: "(A) mysterious survival saga that passionate fans describe as a fusion of Lord of the Flies, The Hunger Games, and Lost." Kirkus Reviews also praised him: "Heart-pounding to the very last moment."
