The Diaries of Adam & Eve Quotes

Quotes

"It tapers like a carrot. I think it is a man. I had never seen a man, but it looked like one, and I feel sure that that is what it is."

Eve

Eve awakens in the Garden with some implicit knowledge of her surroundings. She understands her creation and the purpose behind it. When she meets Adam, she discerns his purpose too. She intuitively understands who he is.

"I wish it would not talk. It is always talking."

Adam

Twain's humor appears in this text. Seeing as Adam is recording his personal thoughts in a diary, it's funny to hear him complain of Eve's constant chatter. If he wanted to talk with her he could, but he prefers to reserve most of his thoughts for the diary. Perhaps this is a reflection of Twain's own feelings toward women.

"This morning found the new creature trying to clod apples out of that forbidden tree."

Adam

Adam doesn't seem to appreciate the significance of Eve's taking of the forbidden fruit. He appears to be tiring of Eve's company, since she's constantly deciding to do things Adam himself would never consider doing. He feels simultaneously responsible for her and curious about her.

"I advised her to keep away from the tree. She said she wouldn't. i foresee trouble."

Adam

Adam is frustrated by Eve's obsession with the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, the forbidden tree. He forbids her from touching the tree anymore, but she ignores him. Finally he abandons her to her own fate, since she seems determined to do what she wants.
