The Doctor's Dilemma Imagery

The Doctor's Dilemma Imagery

Dusting

In the beginning of the play we see Emmy dusting the room. This imagery relates to a woman of a lower class who understands the poorness of though that continues to clutter the minds of the ruling class, including doctors, as to whom is worthy to live or not.

Devotion

Jennifer returns to the doctors after Louis' death wearing a clean dress. The imagery shows us that she is a woman devoted to her late husband, that she will follow what she has asked him to do to the letter.

Final Scene

In the final scene we see that Ridgeon is rejected by Jennifer as they stand amongst Louis' works. The imagery shows that though Louis is dead, he lives on. And, though Dr. Ridgeon lives he is left without any form of legacy as he remains a bachelor.

Death

Louis passes away in the arms of Jennifer and she doesn't even know that he is gone. But, the doctors do and ask her to let him lay on the bed. The imagery shows how death does not always come crashing in, but simply occurs in a much simpler, more subtle way.
