The Ecclesiazusae Imagery

The Ecclesiazusae Imagery

Lamp

We watch as Praxagora swings a lamp in the opening of the play. This imagery shows us that she will be leading the way by bringing light into the darkness.

Assembly

At the Assembly, the women dress as men and are said to appear to be shoemakers. They all cheer on the orator, and the imagery created is one of great support that allows us to understand the fickle Assembly votes on popularity not what is right.

Constipated

Blepyrus comes into the play as a man in need of relieving himself. He is constipated in the street and the imagery reveals that the men of the city are backed up in a way that they are unable to get the metaphorical "crap" out of them in order to function correctly and serve the people.

Beards

The woman are very clear to have beards that go down to cover their bosoms. The imagery of them covering themselves provides for us the understanding that the Assemblymen won't take them seriously, and that their focus will not be on what matters.
