The sequel begins three years after the events of the previous movie. Princess Leia has set up a new base for the rebel forces on the land of Hoth, which Darth Vader is desperate to find.
Meanwhile Luke Skywalker has been captured by a wampa for investigating one of Vader’s probe droids. He fights to escape, and almost dies, but the spirit of Obi-Wan-Kenobi tells him to go to Dagobah to find Master Yoda. Han Solo finds Luke and saves him from death.
The probe signals to the Imperial fleet of the location of the rebels, forcing them to leave Hoth. Han and Leia manage to escape on the Millennium Falcon and grow close. Luke manages to escape with R2-D2 to Dagobah to find Yoda. Yoda accepts Luke as his new mentee and trains him in using the Force.
Meanwhile, Han and Leia are captured by Vader, who uses them as bait for Luke. Luke leaves Dagobah to rescue them.
Luke arrives and fights with his light saber with Vader. Vader cuts off Luke’s hand, and proceeds to taunt him and convince him to join the dark side. In the midst of this, Vader reveals that he is Luke’ father. In shock, Luke drops into an air shaft and uses telepathy to communicate with Leia. She saves him and they escape from the imperial ship. However, Han is left behind.
