Listening In
David arrives to the house and we see him listening to Hana speak to Laszlo. The composition shows Laszlo and Hana framed by the doorway while David sticks to the dirty white wall outside the room. The image tells us that David is in search of secrets and his intentions aren't all above board.
Reflection
Hana pours water into a dish in order to clean herself up and she sees her reflection before breaking down into tears. The imagery shows us that Hana doesn't know what she looks like and that to her she is only a reflection of her whole self.
Shut Out
After Kip's friend is killed by a bomb he locks himself in the barn where he sleeps. Hana attempts to get in but she cannot. The big barn doors won't open. The imagery shows us exactly how closed off Kip is to Hana and the outside world as the war had just ended and there was no more fighting left and yet his friend is killed.
Longing
After Kip saves her from the dynamite in the piano we see that Hana is smitten with him. We see her staring out the second floor window that is barely opened at Kip in the yard. The imagery evokes a sense of longing that she has for the man and that she will seek after him.
