The English Patient (Film) Irony

The English Patient (Film) Irony

War

We see Hana lose two people she loves at the very beginning of the film. She believes that anyone she loves will be killed. But it is the irony of war. Those who love anyone thrust into the battlefield risk losing them forever.

Husband

Hana's mother told her as a child that she would summon her husband by playing the piano. Ironically, while taking care of Laszlo she plays the piano and Kip arrives to stop her from playing as the Germans have rigged the piano with dynamite. Thus Kip has saved her life and now come into her heart.

Wife in Desert

Laszlo asks Geoffrey if it is wise for him to leave his wife behind while he goes off in his plane to explore. Laszlo believes the desert is a place that can be very hard on a woman. The irony is that Laszlo wants him to take Katharine with him because he himself doesn't know if he can control himself being alone with her as he is falling in love with her.

What Do You Love?

After making love to Katharine for the first time Laszlo asks her to tell him everything she loves. She goes through a long list, but ironically ends with the fact that she loves her husband. It turns a connected and beautiful conversation between the two into a separation.

Comfort

After crashing two cars in the desert Laszlo and Katharine stay behind. During the night they sleep in the same car and get very close and comfortable with each other. So comfortable they fall asleep. The irony is that because they have relaxed so much they miss the car that is coming back to rescue them, and they have to wait even longer to be saved.
