Green worked as a chaplain in a children's hospital before beginning his career as a novelist, and his experiences there helped to inform the novel. Also influential was Green's friendship with Esther Earl, a member of the "nerdfighter" community that has sprung up around Green's YouTube projects with his brother Hank.
