Introduction to The Fault in Our Stars

Released in 2012, The Fault in Our Stars is John Green's fifth novel. Green worked as a chaplain in a children's hospital before beginning his career as a novelist, and his experiences there helped to inform the novel. Also influential was Green's friendship with Esther Earl, a member of the "nerdfighter" community that has sprung up around Green's YouTube projects with his brother Hank. Earl died of cancer at the age of 16, and Green has said, "I was really pissed off after [Esther] died, and I had to write my way through it."
