The Game of Love and Chance

The Game of Love and Chance Analysis

There's no denying that this play is adorable. The subject matter is young love, and the downfall of the characters is secretly their fortune. The play has a way of comforting those for whom marriage is still a daunting idea. The version of love that the play offers is one that says, "No, secretly, marital commitment is what you need most, and you're not going to enjoy the process of falling in love, but you might enjoy the results."

Look at the drama of the young couple's discovery of romantic love. Because they have lied about their identity, they don't know who they're falling in love with, and secretly, it was the right person all along. This is a metaphor for the unfolding of young love. At first it feels embarrassing and guilty. But then, if you can surrender and be honest about who you really are, the hesitation gives way to ecstatic joy.

Ultimately the story is about the shyness of first-time lovers, and the restlessness that everyone feels about marriage, both because it is incredibly painful and confusing, as it was for Dorante and Silvia, and also because it demands vulnerability and honesty. However, as Monsieur Orgon knew from the beginning, love has a way of helping everyone know exactly how to be successful, because eventually, falling in love is just too irresistable.
