The Game of Love and Chance Themes

Love will have its way

The poem gives personification to the concept of love, showing that ultimately, the trickery of men is not enough to change their fates. Love as a force seems to get what it wants out of the young couples.

Falling in love is fun

Both kids are nervous for the same reasons, and both kids are suspicious of each other, so the process of them discovering that they secretly do want what they've been committed to is a fun one, a charming game of self discovery that ends in marriage.

You can't take control of love

Silvia and Dorante are actually compatible, meaning that their parents did a good job picking them for each other, but they each doubt their parents and lie about their identity, but ultimately, they naturally ended up together against their intents and against their plans. Their attempt to take control just makes them confused and scared.

You can't help who you love

Whether you have the bug for someone isn't really something you can control. Who doesn't know the feeling Silvia and Dorante depict, feeling like they each fell in love with the wrong person, against their will. That's just what it feels like though. Humans are tricky, but love is trickier.
