The story follows the life of main character Helen Turrell, who becomes pregnant out of wedlock in India, which, at the time, was controlled by Britain. To have the child, she travels to France, and disguises the fact that it is her child out of embarrassment of having an illegitimate son, Michael.

Rudyard Kipling was a British-Indian author that is most famous his work of fiction The Jungle Book. The book was one of the first books that became widely popular and was targeted at young children. Considered a founder of the modern short-story, he was also a famous poet, with works including "Madalay" and "Gunga Din".
