Objective:

Students will learn more about Chinese family life and will identify places where family-related themes appear in the novel.

Structure:

Throughout the novel, the narrator provides details about the structure of Chinese family life. For example, O-lan begs Wang Lung to have her son marry so that her daughter-in-law can move into their house and take care of her. In this activity, students will learn more about Chinese family customs and will tie their findings to events from the book.
