The daughter does not like binding her feet because it hurts, but her mother tells her that if they are not bound her husband will not love her. O-lan believes that because of her large, unbound feet, Wang Lung does not love her. This shows that O-lan has deeply internalized a sense of unworthiness. She thinks that because she is ugly with large feet, she will never be loved. Unfortunately, this is true for her. In her society, she seen as a slave for reproduction and chores.
