"I don't want to go."
Louis tells his mother from the start that he doesn't want to spend the summer away with someone other than his mother (who's having her second baby). His reluctance to go will soon contrast the adventures he will experience during his three weeks away.
LOUIS: "What are you making?"
MARTINE: "Not soda pop, that's for sure!"
Louis comes into the barn to find Martine crushing grapes to make wine. The conversation is about what seems to be very adult things when they are only children. All of this occurs before Martine gives Louis a kiss before leaving.
"Go ahead it's safe."
Martine says this to Louis after they climb up the bell tower to the roof. She has climbed the stairs on the roof many times before and Louis has never attempted it. He's scared, but he trusts her and believes that when she says it's safe that it will be. When he gets to the top, the view is beautiful.
