The Gray Man Metaphors and Similes

The Gray Man Metaphors and Similes

"Writhing on the pavement like a mad man"

The terror attack has confused locals, who scramble for safety in all directions. The presence of masked men and Al Qaida is increasing every minute. The author says, "One local had lost control of his bowels in terror; now he lay soiled and writhing on the pavement like a madman." The local is like a maniac signifying the confusion among the locals due to the abrupt terrorist attack. The masked men are brutal, and when they come across the local man on the pavement, they kick him and order him to stand up while yelling insults.

"Exposing broken teeth like fangs"

The physical appearance of the terrorists is scary, and anyone seeing them for the first time become frightened. Bayliss' experience when he first saw the terrorists explains it all. The author writes, "The terrorist looked down at Bayliss and put his tennis shoe on the young man's shattered leg. He pressed down slowly with a wild grin that exposed broken teeth like fangs." From their appearance, terrorists are dangerous people who do not think twice when killing fellow human beings.

"Burst open like a pressed grape."

The terrorists use smuggled Al Jazeera journalists to brainwash the world of their win in Northern Iraq. Most of the scenes filmed during these brutal operations are scary and discouraging. For instance, the journalists are forced to take pictures of the badly mutilated bodies of the American soldiers and show them to the world. One of the devastating scenes is when the head of an American soldier is snapped until it bursts. The author writes, “Not until the moment when the moqtar’s snapped to the side, burst open like a pressed grape, and sinew, bolls, and bone spewed violently in all directions.” Consequently, the terrorists spread propaganda to claim their win on Northern Iraq by showing the world that they have defeated the USA.
