    Why doesn't Bilbo kill Gollum?

    As a protagonist, Bilbo often prefers to take a non-violent approach. Though he doesn't shy away from killing spiders (as you'll see in a later chapter!), Bilbo is always trying to solve conflicts with minimal bloodshed. Bilbo pities Gollum, and perhaps even empathizes with him - and sees that he can get out alive without harming the poor creature. As anyone who's read The Lord of the Rings saga will know, this act ends up having some important repercussions!
