Notes to the Teacher

Style note: this Lesson Plan follows the capitalization patterns for the Middle-earth races most commonly found in the Tolkien canon. Ergo, Hobbits and Elves and Dwarves (not Dwarfs) take a capital when the reference is to the race, and lower-case when referring to specific individuals or groups. Bilbo is a hobbit, and Hobbits are simple creatures.

The thought questions in this lesson plan provide material and ideas that students can use to write short original essays. For the sake of improving the power of expression, teachers should encourage students to write on topics that have been discussed in class, this time in the more formal writing style expected in a literary essay.
