The House with a Clock in Its Walls Imagery

The sound of clocks in the walls of the house

The sound the clocks in in the walls of the house Lewis and Jonathan Barnavelt lives in is arguably the most important image in the whole book, as the book itself is named after this imagery. The story itself is also centered around the mystery of what the sound is, as well as what it means. The mystery of the sound of the clocks in the walls is in the book since the beginning, and at the end, the answer is revealed. The clock is ticking down towards the destruction of the entire world.

The revival of Selenna Izard

The revival of Selenna Izard wasn’t just the rebirth of an evil witch, nor solely the rebirth of the chance of the apocalypse. Initially, the revival of Selenna Izard was Lewis’ chance of gaining a friend who respects him and his abilities. It was a matter of chance and bad luck that the grave Lewis happened to raise from the dead was the grave of the wicked witch Selenna.

Rose Rita and Lewis Barnavelt

In the end of the book, a short chapter is added about how life is after the trio saved the world. Lewis has gained a friend called Rose Rita Pottinger, and she knows everything about cannons. This could be interpreted as a foreshadowing for the second book, if Bellairs though the book would become a series, or it might mean just what it says: Lewis finally managed to find a friend his age, which was essentially what he had been trying to do throughout the book.
