The House with a Clock in Its Walls Themes

Teamwork

Teamwork is preached though the book in more than one way. Jonathan is trying to find out where he fits, and he has always felt different. His uncle, Jonathan welcomes him in and together with Florence they become a splendid team. And soon, they become more than a team, they become a family, a conjoined unit that work together. And it is only through likewise trust they manage to save the world.

Carrying yourself

Lewis often wonders why people seem to not like him, and why he is plagued by unfortunate events. He believes that he is at fault because of his weight, scrawniness and because he isn’t athletic. Thus, he tries everything to change who he is and fit in. In the end, Lewis realizes that he is great just the way he is, without changing a single thing.

Good vs Evil

Like several other juvenile books, good versus evil and light versus darkness is important throughout the whole story. We learn that Selenna and Isaac Izard were dealing with black, evil magic, while Florence and Jonathan were working with good and white magic. The opposites repulse each other and are at constant war. In the end of the book, the conjoined forces of evil manage to overcome and cast out the forces of evil, letting the light shine brighter than ever, as it is supposed to do.
