The Hunger Games (2012 Film) Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Katniss's Name

Katniss's name is a symbol of her extraordinary talent as an archer. It derives from a plant with edible tubers, called the katniss, or Sagittaria, which means "he who throws arrows" in Latin. Katniss's skill as an archer not only wins her the Games but also saves her life on more than one occasion.

Mockingjay Symbol

The mockingjay is a symbol of rebellion in Panem. Katniss displays this in many ways, including by wearing a mockingjay pin, which is seen as a sign of her extreme defiance. The mockingjay is a symbol of the second civil war in Panem.

Opening Night Dress Symbol

Cinna, Katniss's stylist, works for the Capitol but is able to see through their lies and propaganda, and is in fact a supporter of rebellion and civil war. He designs a beautiful dress for her television interview. It is a wedding dress, but when she raises her arms, the white fabric burns away and is replaced by black feathers, making it appear to be a mockingjay dress. This is a symbol of Cinna's rebellion against the state.

Enobaria's Teeth Symbol

Enobaria is the District 2 tribute, and during the Games bites another tribute's throat to earn her victory. She subsequently has her teeth filed into fangs and inlaid with gold. This is a symbol of her victory and of the way in which she managed to kill her opponent.

Blonde Hair and Blue Eyes Symbol

The Everdeen family have blonde hair, blue eyes, and pale skin. This is symbolic of where they come from as all District 12 citizens have the same characteristics. This is especially true of those who live in the Seam, an impoverished area in the District.
